Republicans Win Key Board Of Legislators Races

All 17 seats on the Westchester county Board of Legislators were up for election this past Tuesday, nine of which were contested, but only three races were expected to be competitive going into the elections.

Republicans won all three of these competitive districts, two of which included an incumbent.

Republican Francis Corcoran won the District 2 seat with 4,900 votes (52 percent), previously held by Democrat Peter Harckham, defeating Democrat Karen Schleimer.

Republican Candidate Margaret Cunzio defeated Democrat John Diaconis for the District 3 seat, previously held by Republican Mike Smith, with 4,043 votes (56 percent).

In the District 10 seat, Republican Sheila Marcotte was re-elected against Democrat Haina Just-Michael with 4,454 votes (52 percent).

These were the board’s closest races. The other contested seats include:

• District 7: maintained by Democrat Catherine Parker with 5,088 votes (58 percent).

• District 9: maintained by Democrat Catherine Borgia with 4,896 votes (65 percent).

• District 14: maintained by Republican Bernice Spreckman with 2,851 votes (54 percent).

• District 15: maintained by Republican Gordon Burrows with 3,804 votes (59 percent).

• District 17: maintained by Virginia Perez with 2,053 votes (77 percent).

Legislators serve two-year terms.

Additionally, here are the results of the county’s major mayoral elections:

• Democrat Richard Thomas won the election for Mayor of Mount Vernon, a three-way race, with 6,743 votes (74 percent).

• Democrat Mike Spano was reelected as Mayor of Yonkers with 14,718 votes (81 percent).

• Republican Frank Catalina was reelected as Mayor of Peekskill with 1,943 votes (54 percent).

• Democrat Noam Bramson was reelected as Mayor of New Rochelle with 5,455 votes (62 percent).
