Real Westchester Weddings: Kate Meehan and Leo Rosado

High school sweethearts marry Brazilian and Irish traditions at The Links at Union Vale in LaGrangeville.

June 25, 2011

Port Chester residents Kate Meehan and Leo Rosado have known each other for a long time. The pair met way back in middle school, at the YMCA, and later became high-school sweethearts. When it came time for the wedding, they drew upon their long history together.

The ceremony took place at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, where Kate, who is now a wedding and party planner, grew up. “The priest who did our ceremony is a friend that I’ve grown up with,” Kate says. “He played in a rock band, and he has the same taste in music we have. In the ceremony, he was quoting from our favorite bands.”

The reception, at The Links at Union Vale in LaGrangeville, continued to draw inspiration from their pasts. The location itself was meaningful; Kate’s father sold property he owned so The Links could be built, and now he golfs there every weekend. The couple also made sure to highlight Kate’s Irish heritage and Leo’s Brazilian roots. (Born in Brazil, Leo is today a Brazilian jiujitsu instructor.) The Emerald Isle was given a nod when Kate’s 10-year-old cousin, who had just won at the 2011 World Irish Dancing Championships, performed a dance with his 12-year-old sister. The couple also participated in the Brazilian tradition of throwing rice over the bride and groom during the reception for good luck. Brigadeiros, or Brazilian bonbons, were a staple in the candy buffet.

Kate’s “something blue” was a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes, which she had embellished with Swarovski crystals by Etsy shop Redo My Shoe. She wore them with a Kitty Chen gown she purchased at Be Unique Boutique in Mount Kisco. A birdcage veil and a dramatic bouquet of purple calla lilies completed the look.

The couple made sure to highlight their personal favorites in their wedding as well. Tables, decorated with either tall manzanita branches or shorter flower arrangements, were named after their favorite musicians, and signs on each table had a song lyric that was meaningful to them as a couple. Their red-velvet cake also had a subtle shout-out to one of their favorite movies, The Nightmare Before Christmas. “We had a monogram with Jack and Sally on it,” Kate says. “We went with a shadow silhouette—we didn’t want it to look like a Halloween cake.”
