Golf Tournaments Are Won—And Lost—With Your Putter

Putting makes the different in tournament golf.

Planning to visit one of the picturesque courses in Westchester? Here’s how to avoid three-putt disasters and make more one-putt winners.

Does anyone ever dream about hitting the winning drive in the U.S. Open? No! It’s always the pressure-packed winning putt that prompts the crowd to explode. Your next tournament may not be the U.S. Open, but you’ll need a fabulous flat stick if you hope to hear the applause on the final hole, whether it’s at  your club championship or a premier tournament like the Emerson Resort & Spa Woodstock Open.

Brad Worthington, Director of Golf at Pound Ridge GC, suggest a simple but deadly drill to erase three-putts from your scorecard. Best of all, it works no matter what grip, stance, or putting style you use.

The 86th Emerson Resort & Spa Woodstock Open will be played at Woodstock GC on July 26. The course features panoramic mountain views and fairway routes along running creeks as well as some of the smallest and fastest greens in the state.

A stellar field of professionals and amateurs will compete in the one-day tournament, won last year by Greg Bisconti, head pro at The St. Andrew’s GC, who has played in three PGA Championships and was low club professional in 2009 at Hazeltine. This year also will boast a talented group of senior players, led by last year’s Woodstock Open senior winner and 2021 Senior POLO Head Professional champion Dave Fusco, 2020 Woodstock Open runner-up Dal Daily along with renowned PGA teaching professional Darrell Kestner and New York Open qualifier Mark Brown.

“With each year it seems this golf tournament’s quality of players gets better and better, and this year is no exception,” says Tamara Murray, Marketing & Sales Director for Emerson Resort & Spa in nearby Mt. Tremper.
