Good courses for Westchester golfers to play aren’t limited to the fine private clubs in the county. These public ones are worth a visit.
Westchester County operates six well-regarded courses open for public play. At the top of the menu is Hudson Hills GC, in Ossining. It’s long, and the rugged terrain creates several forced carries, but multiple tees make it playable for everyone.
Dunwoodie GC, in Yonkers, rewards accuracy more than length off the tee and requires a deft short game to handle its small, challenging greens.
Also in Yonkers, Sprain Lake GC is a must-play since its renovation six years ago.
Maple Moor GC, in White Plains, a short-but-tight course, traditionally receives more play than any of the other five, especially since a multimillion-dollar facelift created excellent playing conditions.
Scarsdale’s Saxon Woods GC is thought to be the most interesting all-around golf challenge of the six county courses. It’s made up of a varied collection of long, short, straightforward, and think-before-you-hit golf holes.
Mohansic GC, in Yorktown Heights, has tight fairways, numerous blind shots, and small, severe greens that make it a real challenge.
Beyond the county-owned courses, the daily-fee golfer should head for Pound Ridge GC, a masterpiece designed by Pete Dye that provides a memorable golf experience.
Somers National GC continues to offer a unique and interesting golf experience on a course designed by Geoffrey Cornish.
Eastchester’s Lake Isle CC is semiprivate and offers both memberships and daily-fee play to residents and nonresidents alike.
Harrison Meadows CC, in Harrison, continues to improve the golfer’s experience with the opening of a full-service restaurant earlier this year. Memberships are available to residents of the town, who can also play (and bring guests) on a daily-fee basis.
In North Salem, Pehquenakonck CC is a semiprivate nine-holer that’s perfect for beginners, young golfers, and anyone looking for a casual, fun round.
