We all know that indoor heat plus cold, dry outdoor air can wreak havoc on your complexion this time of year. But you can save face: We spoke with Kseniya Kobets, MD, who heads the Cosmetic Dermatology Center at Montefiore Einstein Advanced Care in Elmsford, to find out what products we should all be using now.
Choose Hydrating Skincare
“Look for ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, and squalane—they all help reinforce the skin barrier and provide long-lasting hydration,” says Kobets. She says LaRoche Posay’s Double Repair Facial Moisturizer with UV is great during the day, and its Cicaplast Balm B5 is perfect for locking in moisture after using a nighttime serum such as Babor’s 10D Hyaluronic Acid Ampoule Serum Concentrate.
Invest in a Humidifier
“During the winter there is less humidity, especially with indoor heat,” says Kobets. “When skin is dryer, it becomes more sensitive.” Humidifiers help moisturize the air to soothe stressed-out skin. Kobets recommends the Dreo Smart Humidifier HM524S, which offers a customizable auto mode, app control, a mist feature, demineralization and clean mist filters, and aromatherapy—plus it’s designed to be easily cleaned.
Don’t Forget SPF
Sun protection is as crucial during winter as it is in summer, both indoors and outdoors. Keep in mind that UVA rays can penetrate car windows. Apply a moisturizing SPF daily under your makeup to prevent premature aging, sunburn, and pigmentation. Kobets likes LaRoche Posay’s Anthelios UV Hydra Hydrating Face Sunscreen SPF 50. If you prefer wearing a tinted sunscreen, count on Colorscience’s Sunforgettable Total Protection Face Shield Flex SPF 50, a mineral sunscreen that adapts to the tone of your skin when applied. For a hydrating serum with SPF, Kobets suggests Ilia’s mineral Super Serum Skin Tint SPF 40—it comes in a wide range of shades and can be worn with or without makeup.
