Planning on using the Tappan Zee Bridge for your weekend plans? Think again.
The state Thruway Authority has construction work scheduled for this Friday, April 29 starting at 9 pm, until Saturday, April 30 at 2 pm. It will then resume that Saturday night at 9 pm until Sunday, May 1 at 2 pm.
The construction for the New NY Bridge will require triple lane closures on the northbound side (I-87/I-287). Only one northbound lane will remain open, so motorists can expect significant delays.
All southbound lanes will remain open during the construction since there will be work done underneath the exiting bridge.
The construction work involves the installation of six, 75-foot long prefabricated piles, on top of which the new span’s southbound road deck will sit.
There are alternate routes that motorists can take in order to stay on schedule.
For those in the northern part of the county, The Bear Mountain Bridge connects us to northern Rockland and Orange counties. To take the Bear Mountain Bridge, take Interstate 684, the Taconic State Parkway or Route 9 north to westbound Route 202.
If you’re on the southern end, take the George Washington Bridge. Interstate 87, Interstate 95, and the Saw Mill River Parkway (becomes the Henry Hudson Parkway in the Bronx) can get you there.
Due to the noise that this construction will cause, eligible residents who live within the noise and vibration zone will be contacted directly and offered hotel reimbursements for the weekend. The Thruway Authority also plans to use a “noise shroud” on some tools in order to prevent disruptions.
Depending on the weather, the rain date for construction is Friday, May 6, beginning at 9 pm, and to be completed by Saturday, May 7 at 2 pm.
