Police are searching for a person believed to have jumped from the Tappan Zee Bridge early Thursday morning.
Police received reports at 12:30 a.m. that a person had jumped from the bridge. A car was found abandoned on the Rockland-bound side of the bridge, The Journal News reported.
The Rockland County Sheriff’s Office marine unit, along with the Nyack Fire Department boat, and Tarrytown Fire Department, assisted with the search. The search was called off around 2 am but resumed this morning, according to News 12 Weschester.
The identity of the jumper is not currently known. State police believe it could be a 36-year-old man from Irvington who told his family he was going to kill himself, according to News 12 Westchester.
Last week, a woman was talked down from jumping for the Tappan Zee Bridge. The state trooper who talked her down had similarly convinced a man not to jump from the bridge just a year before that.
During the planning stages of the new Tappan Zee Bridge, it was announced that stainless steel netting would be implemented to thwart jumpers.
