Pinehurst Ups the Buddy Trip Experience — Again

When he competed at Pinehurst back in the day, Arnold Palmer gravitated to the Manor Inn, a 43-room hotel a short walk from the hub of the resort. Manor Inn’s relaxed vibe, cozy enclaves and off-the-beaten-path location, not to mention the poker game-perfect Club Room and comfy Library, were favorites of the King.

Today’s Manor Inn has been enhanced with a spacious, communal lobby, larger king and double queen rooms with hardwood floors and two finely appointed hospitality suites that accommodate groups up to 20, making it an ideal headquarters for buddy trips for discerning golfers.

The centerpiece of the lobby is the North & South Bar. Featuring a vast selection of fine whiskey and craft beers from Pinehurst Brewing Co. next door, the bar is adorned with vintage advertising and photos paying homage to the historic North & South Amateur Championship, played at Pinehurst since 1901. Look up, and you’ll find an i illustration of the original routing of Donald Ross’ first four courses at Pinehurst on the bar’s ceiling. A new patio outside the North & South Bar features three firepits, seating for 20 and a soothing water feature (a full day of golf can be a strenuous endeavor).

Nearby is the Pinehurst Brewing Co., which was reimagined in 2018 and today serves up award-winning brews, barbeque smoked onsite and handcrafted pizza in an old steam plant building.

The refreshed lodging and dining options are simply the latest improvement at the Pinehurst Resort.

Over the past decade, its famed No. 2 course was radically restored by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw and  No. 4 was wonderfully re-imagined by Gil Hanse in 2018. Also, during this span, the resort opened its innovative short course, The Cradle, acquired nearby National Golf Club and rebranded it as No. 9, and expanded its 18-hole putting course, Thistle Dhu.
