During the past decade, the City of Peekskill’s population jumped by 8.6%, the highest growth rate of any municipality in Westchester County. The city’s 25,000 residents enjoy easy access to state highways (Routes 9, 6 and 202) and Metro-North’s commuter rail on the Hudson Line.
White Plains Linen (WPL), Peekskill’s largest employer with 400 workers, is expecting even more growth while investing $7.6 million in a new, 90,000-square-foot facility and constructing a 31,460-square-foot building that connects two existing buildings on John Walsh Boulevard.
Peekskill’s Historic Downtown has been the benefactor of significant public and private investment over the past two years. This has included a $1.3 million streetscape and intersection upgrade near Main Street and North Division Street, as well as the development of a new, 11,000-square-foot Walgreens. These investments, when combined with the increasing success of the Paramount Center of the Arts and a vibrant growing restaurant community, have transformed downtown Peekskill into a dining and entertainment district attracting patrons from all across the Hudson Valley.
The Inn on the Hudson, a 53-room hotel that is a gateway to the downtown area, has invested more than $1 million in exterior and landscaping renovations, with plans to modernize and upgrade all of its guest rooms.
In creative partnerships with non-profits, the city is implementing millions of dollars in grant funds on waterfront attractions that will provide a better quality of life for residents while also becoming economic assets in the city’s pursuit to become a cultural and heritage tourism location. In current development are Peekskill Landing, a 4.4-acre park; Lincoln Plaza, a 1.1-acre site and home to the Lincoln Depot Museum (listed on the National Register of Historic Places); and the Hudson River Water Front Trail. All will be completed over the next several years.
