Sunday night at the Golden Globe Awards proved very successful, not only for the stars taking home the coveted awards, but for Westchester as well.
Oscar Isaac, star of HBO mini series Show Me a Hero, came out on top over his fellow nominees to win best actor in a limited series or television movie. The series is a six-episode special based on Lisa Belkin’s book of the same name.
The show has a Westchester Magazine connection as well. Jim Belushi plays Wasicsko’s opponent in the elections, then-six-term Mayor of Yonkers Angelo R. Martinelli, who now serves as chariman of Today Media, the company that publishes Westchester Magazine. The show portrays the construction of low-income housing in a predominantly white middle-class Yonkers neighborhood and the racial controversy surrounding the federal mandate during the 1980s. Isaac assumed the role of 28-year-old Yonkers mayoral candidate Nick Wasicsko.
In his acceptance speech, Isaac made it a point to thank Nay Wasicsko-McLaughlin, widow of Nick Wasicsko, “who shared so much of her life, and her pain, and her joy and without her generosity I would not be standing here. So this is for you Nay, and for the memory of Nick.”
Also notable was Mount Vernon native Denzel Washington’s acceptance of the Cecil B. DeMille Award. The honor presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a prestigious award recognizing outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.
