When Nilda Del Valle Heller and husband Brian Heller found their New Rochelle dream home, the kitchen was more Freddy Krueger than Philippe Starck.
Built in 1912 and not updated for more than 60 years, the couple described their original kitchen as “Cold. Sawdust was everywhere, the floor was three inches off-level from one side to the other, and you could peek through the floor into the basement.” Yikes! Luckily, once a new roof had been installed, the couple was free to turn their attentions to their travesty of an eating space.

Turning to Sweeten, the free online matchmaking service that pairs homeowners with reliable and trusted general contractors, the Hellers began a complete gut-job to transform their 250 square foot kitchen into something livable.
Knocking out a back wall opened up sight lines from the kitchen straight through the eating nook and out the newly installed sliding glass doors. New CoreTec flooring and Bellacor lighting were complemented by new cabinetry by Cliq Studios, including camouflage paneling over the new dishwasher and a shallower, wider pantry that’s more space efficient and more easily organized. A statement wall with backsplash and new Verona range to match the Quartz Master counters contribute to the very sleek design plan.

All told, the project was accomplished within budget and took just 52 days from start to finish. Nilda now describes her kitchen as “blissful,” and if you doubt the veracity of that statement, feel free to send us an incredulous email from the Hellers’ WiFi network: “rockinkitchen”.
