As news spread of the horrific NJ Transit train crash inside of the Hoboken Terminal this morning, it was confirmed that the train—which careened past the end of the track and into a platform at 8:45 am, causing a chaotic and concerning scene—originated in Rockland County out of Spring Valley station, which serves both NJ Transit and Metro-North customers.
Both New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie have confirmed one fatality, with reports of those injured varying from 65 to more than 100.
Many of those injured were transported to Jersey Medical Center, which has created a hotline so that individuals can call to see if their loved are among those being treated. That number is 201-915-2691.
Additional patients have reportedly been taken to Hoboken University Medical Center and Christ Hospital in Jersey City, according to NJ.com. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
UPDATE (2:16 PM): Per NPR, Gov. Christie confirmed at least 108 injured.
UPDATE (3:35 PM): Much attention has turned to whether Positive Train Control (PTC) technology is widely in place on NJ Transit and Metro-North trains yet. Unfortunately, as we’ve reported over the last several months, that remains a slow, politically entangled process.
