Newsweek released its 2014 America’s Top High Schools report on Tuesday, and three of Westchester’s public high schools made the cut, being ranked among the country’s 20 best at preparing their respective students for college.
Determining students’ college readiness by measuring a public high school’s enrollment rate, graduation rate, weighted standardized test scores, holding power, and counselor-to-student ratio, Newsweek’s ranked Blind Brook High School in Rye Brook the ninth-best public high school in the country, Ardsley High School ranked the 15th-best and Briarcliff High School ranked the 17th-best.
The only other New York State school that ranked higher than Blind Brook High School was the Staten Island Technical High School, which landed on a sixth place in the rankings, making it the highest ranking public high school in the state.
New for this year is that Newsweek developed an alternative report alongside its original one entitled “Beating The Odds 2014 – Top Schools For Low-Income Students,” which seeks to recognize schools and students that perform better than what their socio-economic background statistically expects them to. Topping that list is Emma Lazarus High School in New York City.
