How You Can Help Victims of Hurricane Harvey Right Now

Hurricane Harvey is said to be the worst rainfall to ever hit the United States. Here’s what you can do about it.

When a disaster strikes far from us, it’s easy to feel like there’s not much we can do to help. Short of taking off work and flying hundreds of miles to volunteer just isn’t feasible for most people. That said, there are many organizations doing good, important work, and as impersonal as it may seem, money makes a huge difference in how much aid they can provide. For those of us who want to help but don’t know how, the following is a small list of some of the amazing charities and organizations helping right now to bring relief to affected areas.

Hurrican Harvey Relief Fund

Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has set up this relief fund to accept donations specifically to help the affected city. Managed by the Greater Houston Community Foundations, donations can be made by check, money order, wire transfer, or online.

American Red Cross

One of the easiest groups to donate to. Aside from regular donations, you can text REDCROSS to 90999 to instantly donate $10 to American Red Cross Disaster Relief. It’s also important to note that the Red Cross is currently accepting blood donations nationally to serve Hurricane Harvey victims, which is great for those looking to give something a little more personal.

Little Lobbyists

Many relief organizations, even well supplied ones, are not sufficiently stocked to help adults and children with complex medical issues. Little Lobbyists, partnering with the Trach Mommas of Louisiana, Protect TX Fragile Kids, The Parker Lee Project, Advocates for Medically Fragile Kids NC, and Moms of Trach Babies to collect specialized medical supplies and funds to help supply Harvey relief centers with the medical supplies necessary to help care for a potentially fatally underserved portion of the population.

Portlight & The Partnership for Inclusive Disaster Strategies

The Partnership is a group dedicated to aiding high-risk groups and individuals in times of dangerous crises, chiefly those with disabilities and the elderly, who would not be able to evacuate themselves. They have joined with Portlight Inclusive Disaster Strategies to accept donations.

Insulin for Life & The Texas Diaper Bank

Insulin for Life is currently collecting funds and insulin-related medical supplies to distribute to diabetes-affected victims of the flooding. The Texas Diaper Bank, meanwhile, is accepting donations to help supply shelters — which may not typically stock them — with diapers for babies, special needs children, and senior citizens.

Houston Humane Society & SPCA of Texas

Humans aren’t the only ones in need of rescuing. The above groups are rescuing and receiving hundreds of animals from affected areas. The Houston Humane Society doesn’t even receive city funding, so donations are especially necessary for the organization’s continued functioning.

GoFundMe

If you’re looking to make a difference in a specific, tangible way that you can see yourself, consider donating to one of the many Harvey-related campaigns currently raising capital on the popular crowdfunding platform.
