Mary Beth Murphy has been appointed executive director of the Westchester County Tax Commission. Murphy, who had served as Supervisor of the Town of Somers since 1998, will be responsible for reviewing the assessment rolls of towns and cities as they pertain to County taxes and providing advisory services to municipalities concerning assessments.
After more than a decade of service to the United Ways in the Lower Hudson Valley, Naomi Adler, CEO and president of United Way of Westchester and Putnam (UWWP), will depart the organization in May to begin her new role as CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia.

St. Christopher’s, Inc., a local organization dedicated to helping children with special needs and their families, has elected Dobbs Ferry resident David Lipson to its board. The Senior Managing Director at Century Management Services, he is also Treasurer and Founding Member of the Dobbs Ferry Children’s Happy Faces Foundation, and a member of the Make-A-Wish Foundation Hudson Valley Business Council.

Hyatt Place broke ground on February 26 at the Cross County Shopping Center in Yonkers, where it is transforming a former hospital into a hotel. The 155-room, $20 million property is expected to open in 2015 and represents the latest phase of the mall’s more than $250 million makeover.
The Westchester County Association expanded its BLUEPRINT Accelerator Network with the acceptance of six new early-stage companies. The WCA’s BLUEPRINT for Westchester is a private sector initiative, designed to serve as a catalyst for economic development in the county. The WCA BLUEPRINT Accelerator Partners welcome emerging digital healthcare company Mobile Health One; Nuvita; Sternbach & Rose, CPA, PC; W@tercooler; Lola Granola Bar; and Yonkers Brewing Company as the next early-stage companies to receive the benefits of the WCA’s business accelerator program, which include seed financing and mentoring.
Fresh Green Light, a driving school for new teen drivers and their parents, has begun offering services in the Bedford, Chappaqua, and Mount Kisco communities. The school offers quality driving lessons and experiential classes, which will be held at Grand Prix New York in Mt. Kisco.
The Food Bank for Westchester seeks nominations for its 2014 Hunger Heroes Breakfast. The event recognizes a volunteer, a service provider, and a donor who have made exceptional strides against hunger in Westchester County. Nomination applications are due April 1, 2014. The Westchester Putnam One-Stop Employment Center seeks to connect County employers with local talent. The Child Care Council of Westchester Inc. took a sobering look at the financial burden childcare places on working families and advocates for change.
The County announced a prospective plan with The Madison Square Garden Company (MSG) that would make the Westchester County Center a site of games for the National Basketball Association (NBA) Development League starting this fall. Under the proposed plan, the County Center in White Plains would be the home of a New York Knicks-affiliated NBA Development League team. The plan is subject to final approval but, depending on ticket sales, the county projects to net between $48,000 and $288,000 per season.
As part of Hire Westchester, a Westchester-Putnam Workforce Investment Board program made possible through $100,000 in support from the Westchester County Industrial Development Agency (IDA), The Westchester Putnam One-Stop Employment Center will help guide businesses through the steps of recruiting top talent for their available positions, developing a comprehensive training plan, and getting reimbursement for up to half their training costs. A recent study compiled by the Child Care Council of Westchester Inc., a nonprofit resource and referral agency, revealed the financial burden that childcare places on working families. The study asserts that making childcare accessible and affordable to parents can benefit businesses and increase productivity. The study found that employers who invested in child care support for employees benefitted from reduced turnover and absenteeism, better retention and recruitment, and increased productivity.
