New Rochelle Wants to Make It Easy to Find Affordable Housing

With more than 6,000 new apartments on the horizon, the city is centralizing the process of finding new — and reasonably priced — living space.

New Rochelle is planning for its future, as more than 6,000 new apartments are slated to hit the market in the coming 3 to 5 years — more than 10% of which will be affordable housing. To better help current and prospective residents find homes within their budgets, the city has just launched a simplified and unified application process.

New Rochelle’s redevelopment initiative launched in 2015, and the city is successfully speeding construction along by offering incentives for developments that provide a deeper level of affordability to potential buyers. As a result, the number of developments offering at least 10% of their new downtown units at 80% of the area median income has in fact exceeded projected levels.

New Rochelle’s Councilman, Jared Rice, says affordable housing has been and will continue to be a vital part of the city’s downtown redevelopment, with the help of the city’s Affordable Housing Administrator, Housing Action Council.

“New Rochelle’s partnership with the Housing Action Council is one of the many steps illustrating our strong commitment to inclusive growth from which all residents have an opportunity to benefit. The council will make it easier for anyone to find a place to live,” says Rice.

Housing Action Council is a regional not-for-profit organization, based in Tarrytown, that is dedicated to expanding housing opportunities for low and moderate-income households throughout Westchester, and the greater Hudson Valley. It will lead the city’s affordable housing program by managing marketing, qualification of applicants, lottery and subsequent administration of affordable units.

The council makes the application process easier for those who qualify for affordable housing by providing them with a single source to apply to, as opposed to applying to each individual building.
