Joining the growing ranks of Asian fusion restaurants in Westchester is NEO World Bistro & Sushi Bar. Chef and owner Sianto Njotoatmodjo is quick to point out the uniqueness of his dishes, however, which offer a global culinary tour beyond Asia.
The six-month-old NEO can be tricky to find, located on the basement level of a small office building. While there is an entrance to the building on the S. Moger Avenue side, diners may find it easier to access the restaurant from the rear parking-lot entrance (NEO is next door to the Gap.)
Inside, the sleek, minimalist décor is enhanced by mood lighting and lime-green walls. “Simple and modern,” explains Njotoatmodjo. “People love green.”
Njotoatmodjo, who doesn’t cook with a wok, preferring regular pots and pans, says NEO’s menu is a fusion of French, Asian, Indonesian, Mexican, and Italian cuisines and flavors. Appetizers ($3.95 to $11.95), include a ceviche martini, monkfish risotto roll, and shrimp shumai (Chinese dumplings made from scratch). “Everything is homemade; no frozen food,” says Njotoatmodjo.
Among the entrées: Bibimbap ($18.95), a traditional Korean dish of crispy fried rice with vegetables and meat, seafood bouillabaisse ($21.95), and lemongrass-marinated grilled New Zealand rack of lamb ($21.95).
Lunch offerings ($9.95 to $12.95) include savory crêpes, salads, and combo specials.
A full sushi bar presents a myriad of nigiri, sashimi, and maki options. The special rolls are named after positive words, like the joyful mango roll, and the kindness roll. All-you-can-eat sushi is available every Sunday and Monday for $24.95.
The restaurant plans to continue to internationalize the menu in the coming months, adding dishes such as a burrito filled with risotto. The Indonesian-born Njotoatmodjo also takes requests for traditional Indonesian dishes, which are not on the menu. NEO is working to obtain a liquor license and hopes to have one within the coming weeks. Reservations are recommended Friday to Sunday.
