Mount Vernon has recently undergone a transformation from a city of neighborhoods into a bourgeoning center of regional commerce.

On the North Side, home prices are on the upswing and several condominium projects are in development around the area. The South Side has numerous landmarks, like St. Paul’s Church National Historic Site, as well as commercial and industrial businesses. Mount Vernon’s Downtown retains a mid-century charm – thanks to its architecture – but is primed for an economic revival: Plans are in the works to establish commercial office space and rezoning to allow development. Mount Vernon Heights houses Sandford Square and the commercial corridor Sandford Boulevard (6th Street), with stores such as Best Buy, Staples and Bed Bath & Beyond.

Mount Vernon’s four major districts constitute a 4.4-square-mile area known for its richness of diversity. The city has the largest West Indian and West African population in the county, and an active Brazilian community has poured millions of dollars into the economy with the building of new homes and businesses. Popular ethnic celebrations are held throughout the year.

Mount Vernon’s chief employer is the city school district, which is made up of 16 schools. More than 700 teachers are working with approximately 10,000 students. The school district is in the progress of employing more technology tools to aid the learning process.

Mount Vernon Hospital, which treats 25,000 patients a year, is another top employer. An affiliate of the Sound Shore Health System (SSHS), Mount Vernon Hospital has been named a Gold Performance Achievement Award-winner by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. The 115-year-old hospital is set to undergo a $2.5 million expansion doubling the size of its emergency room, including 15 private treatment rooms and upgrades to the waiting area, triage room and other areas in the department.
