Mimaami means “my mother” in Twi, a native Ghanaian dialect, and embodies the foundational spirit of Mimaami Organics skincare. Yonkers resident Mildred Mawusi Agbana was struggling to find effective products for her daughter’s eczema when her mother reminded her of the healing power of shea butter, which has been used by her family for generations. After seeing the efficacy of shea butter for her daughter, herself, and others, Agbana decided to share her products with the world.
The company sources its shea butter from the heart of Ghana and has partnered with women there to provide a steady source of income for multi-generational communities of women. The company purchases its shea butter through a partnership with the Pagsung Cooperative in Tamale, Ghana. In addition, Mimaami Organics is in the process of constructing a modern shea processing center in Ghana’s Savannah Region. The project is committed to empowerment, safety, and environmental sustainability training for all women who work at the center.
The Mimaami Mother & Child Health Fund invests in the women of Ghana and provides mentorship in sustainability practices, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Since 2022, 5 percent of the company’s profits are used to provide maternal and child health support in Ghana.
Mimaami’s bestseller is the whipped shea butter, a nontoxic unrefined Grade A body butter. The butter comes unscented, as well as in lavender and white chocolate scents. The Natural Eczema, Psoriasis Skincare Kit includes the Organic African Black Soap Body Wash and the Whipped Body Butter. The Pure Organic Rosewater Facial Mist has soothing, hydrating, and calming properties. Pure, unrefined oils include: baobab oil, containing vitamin C; moringa oil, which is often used to treat the appearance of scars; and marula oil with vitamins C and E, often used for those with eczema and dry skin.
In a consumer marketplace inundated with the noise of endless social media tips, Mimaami’s Organics keeps things pure and simple. The ingredient glossary on the company’s website lists the benefits, sourcing, and uses for each ingredient in all of the products.
