A Mexican drug lord believed to be responsible for the death of a Pelham man in Mexico more than a year and a half ago was arrested Tuesday.
The arrest comes a year and a half after the trending hashtag #HelpFindHarry was created to help the investigation into the disappearance of Harry Devert, a 33-year-old stock-trader and Pelham resident who disappeared while traveling in Mexico. He was riding to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil on a Kawasaki motorcycle when he went missing. Five months later, his dismembered remains were found in two garbage bags, with that same motorcycle parked right next to him.
Adrian Reyes Cadena was arrested Tuesday in connection with Devert’s murder. Known as El Tigre, Reyes Cadena is the purported leader of the “Guerrero Guard” gang, a drug gang operating from the Pacific Coast of Zihuatanejo, Mexico.
A statement from federal police alleges that Mexican officers obtained a search warrant for several homes in Zihuatanejo, leading to the arrest of Reyes Cadena and a second alleged gang leader, Mariano Sierra Santana.
Ann Devert, Harry Devert’s mother, has long suspected Reyes Cadena was involved in her son’s death and has found some relief in the arrest, but believes there is more to this case than has been revealed, she told the Journal News. She believes others may have been involved in her son’s death as well.
“This is just the tip of the iceberg,” Devert told The Journal News.
On January 15, 2014, Harry Devert wrote his last text message to be seen by his friends or family. To his girlfriend he said, “Just got an hour and a half long escort out of some area it was too dangerous for me to be.” He continues, “Gonna get back on the road soon. Apparently there’s another military escort waiting for me in some other town…hopefully get a chance to talk to you tonight when I (hopefully) finally arrive.”
Following Devert’s disappearance, Ann began to raise awareness about her the case through a social media campaign, creating a Facebook page and #HelpFindHarry.
On the Help Find Harry Facebook page, Ann Devert posted a quote taken from Harry himself, “People who wonder if the glass is half empty or half full miss the point. The glass is fillable.”
