Met Writers Dinner to Dish Out Golf Honors

Davis Love III headlines the 65th annual awards gala, taking place in Tarrytown

Davis Love III takes a small detour through Westchester on his way to the PGA Championship at Baltusrol to be honored by the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association (MGWA) on Monday, July 25, at the Westchester Marriott in Tarrytown.  The 21-time PGA Tour champion and captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team will receive the Gold Tee Award at the MGWA’s 65th National Awards Dinner.

The popular Love is best remembered in Westchester for his win at the 1997 PGA Championship at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, when a rainbow appeared as he holed out a putt for his victory on the 72nd hole. Among his other wins were the Player Championships in 1992 and 2003.

Also honored at the banquet will be longtime Metropolitan Golf Association (MGA) Executive Director Jay Mottola, who will receive the group’s Distinguished Service Award. Mottola began his career with the MGA in 1977 and has served as its director since 1982.

Century Country Club in Purchase was named the MGWA’s club of the year for 2016, an award presented for upholding the spirit and traditions of golf.

The family of PGA Tour star Keegan Bradley will be honored as Family of the Year by the MGWA. Keegan Bradley won the 2011 PGA Championship during his debut year on the tour, and is currently performing well at this year’s already-underway British Open. His aunt, Pat Bradley, won 31 LPGA Tour events including six major championships. Her brother, Mark, Keegan’s father, is a head professional near Jackson, WY.

Notah Begay III will receive the MGWA’s Winnie Palmer Award, which acknowledges an individual who consistently gives their time, energy, and enthusiasm to those less fortunate. The four-time PGA Tour created his NB3 Foundation in 2003 to fight the epidemics of childhood obesity and Type 2 diabetes among Native American children. Begay is the only full-blooded Native American to play on the PGA Tourand currently serves as a TV golf analyst for NBC Sports and the Golf Channel.

Rounding out the ceremony will be the Golf Channel’s Tim Rosaforte, who will receive the Linc Werden Golf Journalism Award.
