Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Expands In Westchester

You’ve probably heard of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), the world-renowned treatment center for outstanding cancer care. But did you know that starting October 6 it will be more accessible to Westchester and Fairfield County residents? That’s because MSKCC’s new freestanding outpatient facility will be opening in West Harrison.

“MSK’s West Harrison site is unique because it is a comprehensive cancer center,” said Dr. Chau Dang, the chief of medical oncology services at MSKCC (and a resident of Harrison). “We will have support services to help heal the bodies and minds of our patients and their families. We will also have state of-the-art diagnostic and imaging modalities.”

MSKCC is one of only 41 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers. MRI, large-bore CT simulator, PET scans, ultrasound, and mammography are some of the technologies available for diagnostic purposes. The staff includes more than 35 experts in various fields.

After diagnosis, patients will have access to a radiation treatment-planning system that integrates innovative radiation therapy methods that are demonstrated with two state-of-the-art linear accelerators, and direct access to proton therapy. Proton therapy is an exceptionally focused treatment method that minimizes doses to areas outside of the tumor target. These minimally invasive tools provide the most accurate treatment possible for reduction of radiation exposure to healthy tissue.

Patients will also have access to personalized medicine, such as targeted drugs recently approved to treat melanoma, prostate, and lung cancers. They will also benefit from leading and cutting-edge clinical trials and treatments developed by Memorial Sloan Kettering’s clinicians and researchers. “Many of our staff members are currently working at MSK already in Manhattan,” Dr. Dang says. “For example, most of the doctors actually live in Westchester and the surrounding areas, myself included. We have been commuting to Manhattan to see our patients. Now, we can see our patients closer to their homes and this will make their lives a lot easier.”

Medical oncology, radiation oncology, neuro-oncology, chemotherapy, diagnostic radiology, surgical consultations, dermatology (including Mohs surgery), and other support services allow the facility to provide cancer care for the whole patient in one place, including genetic counseling, pain management, lymphedema therapy, clinical research trials, survivorship services, social work, and nutrition counseling.

Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s sole focus is on cancer. Patients of Memorial Sloan Kettering in West Harrison can look forward to local access to a cancer care facility that sets the standard with their specialized multidisciplinary collaborating team.

According to Dang, “our new center is built to deliver compassionate and excellent comprehensive cancer care to our patients near their homes.”
