Who
Joanna Buchanan, Owner, Joanna Buchanan, Wilton
Background
I’ve been designing for more than 20 years and founded my company in 2014.
Design Philosophy
Colorful, eclectic, and textural — but deeply rooted in quality.
Inspiration
My garden, and I also love antique fairs. I finally went to Brimfield a couple of years ago for the first time. My mind was blown — and my car was full!
Hottest Trends
â–º Glossy color on walls and ceilings feels really fresh.
â–º Using natural materials in unusual ways or in new shapes.
â–º The very preppy look is starting to wane. Bringing in ethnic items and crafted pieces gives rooms more dimension and interest.
Top Tips
â–º Start with the feeling you want to create. Moody? Glamorous? Rustic?
â–º Then make it personal.
â–º Keep it edited.
â–º Take your time.
Go-To Home Design…
Shelter Magazines (Other than Westchester Home): Veranda is always an enjoyable and uplifting read — total eye candy — and the new designers and unusual interiors are why I love to read Elle Decor.
Websites: LaDoubleJ.com has clothing but also amazing homewares. I love the commitment to boldness!
Instagram Feeds: I love the way inspiration from Instagram is so varied and immediate. @CultivatedbyChristin is a daily joy from the amazing florist Christin Geall. @PenreathandHall gives me a daily dose of British style.
TV Show: There’s a show in the UK called Escape to the Chateau, which I binge-watch when I am at my mother’s. It’s the classic makeover show with all the highs and lows but very posh.
Home Design Resources
Westchester Shops/Showrooms: Nest Inspired Home (Rye) is my kind of store for artwork, texture, and pillows galore. Anthropologie (White Plains) is an excellent resource for inexpensive pops for your home, like new pottery and textiles for seasonal changes, and I love the multitextural approach to merchandising products at Current Home (Scarsdale).
Connecticut Shops/Showrooms: I always find a wonderful selection of lights at Lillian August (Greenwich). You never know what you are going to find at Stamford Wrecking (Stamford). It’s a fantastic hunt, and they have great outdoor pieces. Swoon (Westport) is a wonderful place to pop into for some feminine inspiration.
New York City Shops/Showrooms: Even though ABC Carpet is downsizing, I find the product mix compelling, and it’s always a discovery process, which I love. The craziest things show up at Mantiques Modern, a fab antique shop on West 22nd, and we have found some fantastical pieces. The new One Kings Lane store in SoHo is a fun shopping experience with tons of great design ideas.
Brands/Designers: Cole and Son wallpaper is a big part of my life; Designers Guild fabric for bold prints and patterns; and Hermès china (I don’t have any yet, but it’s a goal!).
