Sisters Sophia Karipides (“Fofie”) and Maria Katsaros (“Mia”) are a creative and energetic design duo. Karipides has worked in the design business for more than 20 years, with such brands as Jonathan Adler and Lillian August, while Katsaros has a background in marketing and psychology and runs a few different businesses.
A year ago, when the sisters (below) took a road trip to an old barn upstate to find vintage pieces, they were bitten by the entrepreneurial bug. “We always find amazing pieces, and we were talking about how hard it is to find pieces like the old bed frame or vintage distressed cabinet that we had just bought, and then boom! — a light bulb went on,” says Katsaros. “We thought, Let’s bring all of these amazing pieces to our area!”
The sisters took the plunge and opened Fofie & Mia’s in Larchmont last fall. Walk in, and you immediately want to make yourself at home in one of their stylish vignettes.
“In my opinion, every room should have a museum piece and everything else complements it and allows it to stand out. That’s what our philosophy is built on,” says Karipides.
The eclectic and cozy shop curates one-of-a-kind pieces and home accessories; carries custom, vintage, handmade, and upholstered furniture and tabletops; and offers design services and delivery. They design and build custom pieces to fit any space for homeowners and designers alike.
“We love building something special for our clients,” says Katsaros. “Every house is quirky and different, so not only may it be necessary to have something built for a particular area, but sometimes a custom-built piece makes your home décor truly unique.”
