Meet the Local Doctor Who Takes Care of Bees

An MD has turned his passion for all things beekeeping into a family business

Dr. Bill Jacobson, a Rye-based family practitioner, was introduced to beekeeping about five years ago by one of his patients. Tucked into the gorgeous foliage of the Hudson Valley, Jacobson now has eight hives in his own backyard, the base for his company, From Hive to Table.

Honeybees have become a family affair as Jacobson tends to the bees, his children help fill honey jars and design the beeswax candles, and his sisters run the website and marketing. Growing up with nine sisters, and being a father to three daughters, Bill is no stranger to a female-oriented culture, much like the honeybee colony.

There are many similarities between beekeeping and being a doctor. Both require patience and practice, both are healing — raw honey is a super food that nourishes the body, displays characteristics of a natural immune system booster, and has been shown in some cases to heal wounds.

Jacobson most enjoys drizzling his honey over brie and making protein bites out of it (peanut butter, goji berries, granola, and of course honey).

Jacobson is passionate about his beekeeping, speaking to his bees with a soft banter and using a gentle nudge as they buzz around him. While he assures me that honeybees don’t generally sting, he admits he has been stung a few times.

From Hive To Table offers raw honey and beeswax candles ranging from $12 to $35. Find out more at www.fromhivetotable.com or buy off the shelf at Jerry’s Post Road Market in Rye or Rooster’s Market in White Plains.
