Manhattanville Lacrosse Player Killed By Alleged Drunk Driver

Robby Schartner was 21 years old

As reported by Poughkeepsie Journal and others, Robby Schartner, a 21-year-old Mahattanville College student whose family resides in Fishkill, was killed Sunday morning after being struck by an alleged drunk driver on Westchester Avenue in White Plains.

Schartner, a junior entering his third season with Manhattanville’s Valiants lacrosse team and studying marketing, was walking back to the college’s campus at close to 5 am when Emma Fox, 24, of Rye, hit him under the Anderson Hill Road overpass. Fox, whose blood-alcohol content was tested at 0.21 after the incident, was held today at Westchester County jail on $100,000 bail after being arraigned on a felony count of vehicular homicide and a misdemeanor driving while intoxicated. Her 2012 Nissan Sentra was impounded by police.

On a GoFundMe page set up in the wake of the incident by Schartner’s siblings, they describe being “beyond shattered” by the news of their brother’s death, adding that he was a beloved son, grandson, uncle, friend, and “dedicated college lacrosse player.” The latter sentiment was echoed by Manhattanville President Michael Geisler in an email sent to faculty, students, and staff on Monday that emphasized Schartner’s “commitment to his team.”

“The sacrifices he made inspired the team and epitomized what it means to be a scholar-athlete at Manhattanville,” Geisler said of Schartner, who scored the first three goals of his career last season. “Whatever he was asked to do, he did with a smile on his face.”

Staff from the college’s counseling center will be available throughout the week for members of the Manhattanville community.
