Low-Cost Ideas To Update A Master Bedroom

Giving your bedroom a facelift? Four Westchester design experts have some quick tips for you.

“Go to a salvage yard and buy a beautiful headboard,” says Iliana Moore of Iliana Moore Interiors in Bronxville. “A bedroom really isn’t complete without one. Then go to thrift shops and buy gold-framed furniture and re-cover them yourself.”

Window treatments are also bedroom essentials. “You can get really nice ready-made drapes at Target,” says Laurel Bern, of Laurel Bern Interiors in Bronxville. “And a lot of my clients are choosing inexpensive indoor-outdoor carpets for their bedroom. Sometimes just having one really smashing thing in the bedroom makes the difference. For example, you can get fabulous and inexpensive lamps from Etsy, or some fun pillows to perk things up.”

Shop flea markets (or your mother’s attic) for old dressers and night tables and freshen them up with spray paint. “In one home I worked on,” says Susan Anthony of Anthony & Olanow Design Group in Rye, “the teenager still had these white dressers with painted flowers from when she was little. We painted them and freshened up the knobs. It’s a really amazing way to recycle instead of throwing stuff away. You can also take old lamps and get fun lampshades at the Accessories Store in Connecticut. Sometimes, just that, and a few pillows from Home Goods does the trick.”

Repainting the room to change the color or tone is a cost-effective way to change the entire look of a room advises Gail Sirota of GLS Design in New Rochelle. “Be daring and choose an exciting color,” adds Jackie Cutler of Jacqueline D. Cutler in Scarsdale. “Or change the lighting fixtures or the bedding. Changing one thing can change everything. “
