Three local golfers took the big step to the first tee of the US Open this week with impressive rounds in the sectional qualifying tournament played at Canoe Brook CC in New Jersey. Cameron Wilson of Rowayton, CT, MGA Player of the Year in 2009, tied for medalist honors at 7 under for two rounds with Calum Hill of Silver City, NM.
Just a stroke behind was Mike Miller of Brewster, MGA Player of the Year in 20011 and 1012, who tied with 2016’s player of the year Stewart Hagestad. Rounding out the contingent was Theo Humphrey of Greenwich, who secured his slot in a playoff. Humphrey was the 2011 MGA/MetLife Boys champion and was named an All-American and SEC Player of the Year during his senior year at Vanderbilt.
This will be the second trip to the US Open for both Wilson and Miller. Wilson qualified as an amateur in 2012 to play at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Miller competed at Oakmont in 2016. Wilson is currently playing on the Web.com Tour while Miller vies on the Mackenzie Tour in Canada with qualifying status in Web.com Tour events.
