Lin-Manuel Miranda's Oscars Tux Was From Westchester

His classy, conservative look was created by Yonkers-based San Marko Formals, where he also bought a tuxedo for his high school prom in 1998.

Lin-Manuel Miranda might have costume designer Paul Tazewell to thank for Hamilton’s Tony-winning wardrobe, but when it came down to dressing to the nines for the 89th Academy Awards, Miranda turned to a local tuxedo shop.

Shrugging off the red carpet tradition of flaunting eye-catching designer fashion, Miranda, who narrowly missed out earning EGOT status Sunday night, opted for a much more conservative look. Miranda donned a humble black and white tuxedo with a chic knit skinny tie and clip (plus a blue ribbon showing support for the ACLU), purchased from Yonkers’ San Marko Formals.

“I love those dudes,” Miranda wrote in a tweet.

Miranda had a hand in the tuxedo’s design, teaming up with San Marko’s general manager Robert Forchetti to devise the custom Oscars-wear. “Lin wanted something conservative and classic,” explains Forchetti. “We designed it together.”

Forchetti says his shop has been serving Miranda and his family for “many, many years:” a claim backed up by Miranda himself when he mentioned to Ryan Seacrest that San Marko’s sold him his high school prom tux back in 1998.

“We’d love for him to send us a picture,” says Forchetti, explaining that no one currently at the shop recalls a young Miranda stopping by that long ago.

Ever since their name was dropped on the red carpet, San Marko has received an uptick of attention, mostly from various news outlets who have been stopping by “all night long,” says Forchetti.

Yet, way more deserving of the media’s obsession is Miranda’s date for the evening — his mother, Luz, who, before stunning the red carpet with a long, black evening gown and elbow-length gloves, managed to fit in an episode of Gilmore Girls on the way to the ceremony
