With its eye-catching, bright-yellow awning protruding out towards Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck’s Limoncello is tough to miss. Open since mid-October, the Italian eatery has replaced what was formerly Tollgate Steakhouse.
The décor has been reworked with marble floors, sconces, and Venetian-plastered walls, to create a Tuscan feel. The dining room is still split onto two floors; a new stairway was built to provide easier access to the second level. An ample bar area is located near the entrance.
As executive chef Silvio Vitiello explains, the menu of pasta dishes and meat-based main courses is a mix of Northern and Southern Italian cuisine (Northern featuring more cream sauces, Southern based around tomato sauce). Antipasti include fico con bufala ($13)—buffalo mozzarella and figs wrapped with prosciutto, and the restaurant favorite, arancini ($11)—rice balls made with Arborio rice, ground beef, and mozzarella.
Among signature pasta dishes (ranging from $16 to $21): rigatoni Calabrese, lasagna in a Bolognese sauce, and jumbo lobster ravioli. On the main course menu: salmon piccata ($22), veal rollatini ($22), and chicken scarpariello ($21). Chef Vitiello also creates regular specials, such as beef braciole and baccala. Cheesecakes and apple crisp are offered for dessert.
The restaurant is looking to drum up lunch business by offering its dinner guests 10-percent-off lunch coupons. Catering can be provided with at least two days’ advance notice.
Limoncello is open for lunch Tuesday to Friday, 11:30 am to 3:30 pm, and for dinner Tuesday to Thursday, 4:30 pm to 10 pm, Friday, 4:30 pm to 11 pm, Saturday, 5 pm to 11 pm, and Sunday, 1 pm to 9 pm. The restaurant is closed on Mondays, but is available for private parties of 35 people or more on Sundays and Mondays. Private parties also can be reserved on the lower level Monday through Thursday for up to 50 people. Parking is valet only.
