La Mora Senior Apartments will provide the senior community in South Yonkers with affordable housing in a energy-efficient building.
With many seniors in Westchester County relying upon fixed income, it can be a challenge to find affordable housing. Fortunately, a new development is coming to Yonkers that will make senior living both accessible and achievable in the region.
Now under construction in Westchester, La Mora Senior Apartments will provide those aged 62 years or older who have an income at or below 60% of the Area Median Income with affordable and comfortable housing.
In October, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that construction has begun on the $44-million-dollar housing development in Yonkers. La Mora Senior Apartments are part of Governor Hochul’s plan to make housing more affordable, equitable, and stable across New York State.
The Governor recently secured a new $25 billion, five-year, comprehensive housing plan. This plan was introduced in the FY 2023 State Budget and will increase housing supply by creating or preserving 100,000 affordable homes across New York. A total of 10,000 of those homes will be equipped with support services for vulnerable populations.
“This project will help to ensure that seniors in Yonkers have a safe, comfortable place to live in the vibrant community they call home,” says Governor Hochul. She also notes that, as part of her housing plan, the state will continue to put forth resources to create quality homes where older New Yorkers can “live with dignity and peace of mind.”
Not only will the development be affordable and house modern characteristics, but it will also incorporate sustainable features. Each apartment will include low-flow plumbing fixtures, Energy Star appliances, individual high-efficiency electric heart and cooling, and LED lighting. The building itself will have a high-efficiency envelope, dual-pane insulated windows, and a central hot water heating and distribution system.
“The La Mora Senior Apartments is an example of what can be done nationally to incorporate sustainable features into affordable housing. Our seniors must be protected from the ravages of climate change such as flooding in areas that are still suffering from past redlining practices that have impacted urban neighborhoods,” says Wilson Kimball, Municipal Housing Authority for the City of Yonkers President and CEO.
The city held a groundbreaking ceremony for the project on October 12.
The four-story building that will occupy 57 one-bedroom and three two-bedroom apartments will be in the Hollow neighborhood of South Yonkers. The development will be built on a vacant parcel bought by the Municipal Housing Authority of the City of Yonkers.
La Mora’s residents will be able to access services provided by the Yonkers Office for the Aging and funded by the Office for the Aging and the Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services. A few of these include home-delivered meals, case management, recreation and exercise programs, and supermarket and pharmacy delivery coordination.
