Jonathan Boies, a longtime Westchester resident and son of local lawyer and public figure David Boies, died on February 22, 2019 at 50 years old from unexpected complications related to a vascular brain condition while in South Florida.
Born in New York City to David Boies and his second wife, Judith, on March 30, 1968, Boies grew up to follow in his parents’ footsteps as a lawyer, earning a Juris Doctor degree from Tulane Law School in New Orleans. After David Boies left Cravath Swaine & Moore in 1997 to form Boies, Schiller & Flexner, Jonathan Boies became the first young associate of this new law firm.
Boies was first and foremost interested in business, forming a document processing company called SiteLogic Technologies, as well as an organic agricultural business in Northern California called Diamond B Farms.
Boies settled with his family in Westchester and is survived by his son, Joshua, 13, a student at Rippowam Cisqua School in Bedford who, like his father, is a talented and passionate athlete. “Joshua was the center of his life,” says David Boies.
“Jon was a man born to be a father, so he could still act like a kid and have fun,” says ex-wife Jodie Boies. “Jon’s kind heart, charm, and charisma made an impression on every person who came into his life.”
According to his father, Boies was passionate about politics and social justice, topics he would debate strenuously, yet had not a single mean bone in his body.
“Jonathan was kind and optimistic. Extremely lively, a delight at every party and gathering. He loved to dance, loved music. He was passionate about everything he did,” says David Boies. “For 40 years he was a passionate and generally disappointed Jets fan [Laughs]. He always helped organize family reunions, and was a favorite uncle to his nieces and nephews. Everbody gravitated toward him.”
A burial and private service for family and friends is planned for this Sunday, March 3 in Westchester. Boies was a long-time supporter of Northern Westchester Hospital and other local charities, and his family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Boies’ memory to Northwell Hospital in Mt. Kisco or to the charity of their choice.
In addition to his son Joshua, Boies is survived by his parents Judith and David Boies, his twin brother Christopher Boies, siblings David Boies III, Mary Regency Boies, Alexander Boies, former wife Jodie Boies, as well as stepmother Mary Boies and stepfather Robert Christman. His sister Caryl predeceased him.
“He believed in the possibility of love on earth and tried with great success to make that happen wherever he was,” says Judith Boies.
