It wasn’t too long ago that Black Tap’s “Crazy Shakes” rose to popularity and became instant Internet sensations with long lines to match. Inevitably, copycats of these monstrous milk-and-ice cream mixtures began turning up, including here in Westchester. Look no further, for example, than Lazy Boy Saloon‘s silliness in a glass or Madison Kitchen‘s sleeker, more refined version. And the latest regional venue hopping on the fad is country-western bar Johnny Utah’s in nearby South Norwalk, CT.
Johnny Utah’s currently offers five different “Super Shakes,” four of which I got to sample, including one “Shake of the Month.” Each iteration starts with a fairly traditional foundation, but around and atop the rim, they become increasingly, cartoonishly decorated and creamy. Not to mention they make a great Instagram post. Each one sells for $10 (or $15 with a hooch of your choice), even if Pulp Fiction’s Vincent Vega would surely scoff.
If you decide to take the lactose-laden, sugary plunge, here are your choices:
Chocolate Peanut Butter – Topped with Hershey’s Milk Chocolate sections, mini Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, a mound of roasted marshmallows, and whipped cream. The outside of the glass is coated in peanut butter.
Cherry Bomb – Cherry shake blended with Skittles, vanilla-frosting rim with various fruity candies, whipped cream, Skittle shavings, a cherry Pop Tart, and cherry pie.
Blueberry Muffin – Blueberry shake, rimmed and topped with vanilla frosting, blueberries, blueberry muffins (regular and mini sized), and whipped cream.
Cookies & Cream – Cookies and cream shake, topped with whipped cream, Oreo, and Cookie Crisp cereal, with a vanilla-frosting rim and cookie crumbs.
Vanilla Bacon – Vanilla shake blended with bacon bits, topped with bacon, whipped cream, and French fries.
Shake of the Month: Payday – Peanut butter-vanilla shake, whipped cream, peanut-butter rim, crushed peanuts, and PayDay bars.
People will stare at you as you sip away, and finishing a whole one is quite the task, which I admittedly failed. Are you up to it?
