Intel Picks 22 Regional Students For Prestigious Science Talent Search Competition

Meet the students representing Westchester and the Hudson Valley in the annual Intel Science Talent Search.

Technology giant Intel announced on Wednesday that 22 students from Rockland and Westchester counties are among 300 national semifinalists in the annual Intel Science Talent Search.

The local students were chosen from a pool of almost 2000 applicants from across America for science projects ranging from those with a local focus, like how the Hudson River’s environment affects its American eel population, to research focused on subjects much farther afield—white dwarf stars in the depths of space, for instance.

Ossining High School boasted the most regional semifinalists—five—and was second statewide only to the Bronx High School of Science, from which eight finalists were selected.

“Being a semifinalist is a great feeling,” said Aaron Maxwell, one of Ossining’s five semifinalists. “Not only for me, but also I feel it’s a victory for the entire community, the school, the science research program, and obviously for the five semifinalists, too.”

The semifinalists from Ossining High School introduce themselves and their projects.

Intel will announce 40 finalists on January 21 who will be invited to Washington DC to meet in March, when they’ll publicly display their projects and meet with science professionals. Three winners will be awarded $150,000 in prize money.

As the Journal News reports, this year’s batch of local finalists is larger than last year’s: In 2014, there were 21 regional semifinalists. Although none of them were chosen as winners, two honorable mentions with cash prizes were given to New York students from Nassau and Suffolk counties.
