In-Cider Information

Apple lovers, rejoice! June 3 marked the beginning of the Hudson Valley’s sixth annual Cider Week, ushering in opportunities to taste and learn about America’s oldest (and, perhaps, historically favorite) libation throughout the area, including several destinations in Westchester. And as we head into the penultimate weekend of spring, it’s not too late to check out some of the tannic events happening near you, like a Nine Pin Tasting at the Tapp in Tarrytown and Hardscrabble‘s tasting/BBQ/live-music night in North Salem before the proceedings wrap up this Sunday. Cider Week’s also increased its presence in local restaurants, bars, and liquor stores.

The timing for this celebration of all things McIntosh and Granny Smith is apt, as regional cider initiatives have made for pressing news over the past few years. According to a report released by the USDA in 2014, New York is home to some 40,000 acres of apple orchards, and produces an estimated 1.26 billion pounds of apples each year—making it the second largest apple-growing region in the country. Pair this with our state’s penchant for artisanal brewing, not to mention a good alcoholic apple drink’s crisp appeal, and it’s easy to see why cideries are taking root left and right. Viva la fermented fruit!
