While the number of sweltering summer days seems to be dwindling down, forecasts for the coming month still include some unsettling humid conditions. For many of us, that means staying inside rather than braving the conditions. On the bright side, you live in Westchester, and there is a wealth of indoor enterprises to keep you entertained while avoiding the sun. So for those days you’re not feeling like catching rays, consider these awesome, air-conditioned activities around the county.
Cheap Skates
If there’s any place to keep high temps on ice, it would be the Westchester Skating Academy in Elmsford. Grab a few friends, strap on some skates, and hit their public sessions any Friday night in August, or bring the kids to their weekend sessions between 1:30-4 pm. Admission is $11 for adults, and with a $4.50 skate rental, a trip to the Skating Academy makes for an affordable, fun night out—breaking a sweat optional.
Museum Peace
With all the boasting of Westchester’s rich history and vibrant art scene, you might find yourself asking, “Where is all this creativity kept?” Well, museums of course. And Westchester has plenty of those. For the visually inspired, check out Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art in Peekskill. If you’re looking for a taste of history, the Katonah Museum of Art and Neuberger Museum of Art both emphasize eclectic cultures and eras. Or for something more multi-dimensional, stop by the Hudson River Museum and interact with The Inflatable Art of Jimmy Kuehnle.
Swim Indoors
If you’re still looking to get your laps in, the White Plains YMCA has a large pool and a small pool for kid and adult programs, family swim time, and group classes like aqua Zumba. Evening lap swim hours are offered at the New Rochelle YMCA, too. The JCC of Mid-Westchester is also worth checking out for morning adult lap swimming, and evening open swimming.
Off to the Races
For more of an adrenaline rush, check out Grand Prix of New York’s (GPNY) indoor go-kart racing facility in Mount Kisco. They provide all the necessary equipment, and boast a bowling alley, massive arcade, casual dining, and a bar (in case you need to de-stress from a day of screaming kids).
