Tucked in a cozy nook across the street from the entrance of Rye Playland, On the Way Cafe attracts locals for its classic brunch offerings and award-winning pancakes. But while the frittata, omelets, and pancakes are certainly a reason to visit the comfy family business, you’d be remiss if you did not jump on the chance to try a scone, especially if it comes fresh out of the oven.

On The Way’s scones are not dense like a typical scone. Thanks to the owners accidently forgetting the batter in the freezer one hot summer day, they discovered that a little chill helps relax the gluten in the batter, which results in a lighter, fluffier scone.
They’re made in eight varieties, and whether you choose a sweet option made with fresh fruit, or savory baked with meat and cheese, each is packed with flavor. They usually offer about four or five different options daily. However, they are not always made daily, and they sell out quickly, so there is no guarantee you’ll get one. If you want to make sure you snag some, owner George Degenhardt recommends calling ahead to see if they have them or if they have already sold out.
The flavors include: date walnut; apricot; chocolate chip; cranberry; mixed berry; coconut chocolate chip; bacon, cheddar, and jalapeno; and sundried tomato and provolone. Occasionally, they bake specialty options like s’mores or candied ginger and honey. Each scone goes for $5. Degenhardt also recommends trying their homemade crumb cakes, which come in plain, blueberry, and chocolate caramel, and also sell for $5. Watch out, those move fast too so set your alarm clocks early.
