While you may be able to enjoy a good cup of tea at many places, high tea is a completely different endeavor. It’s not just about the tea or the towers of finger sandwiches and petit fours; it’s about sophistication and elegance. And the Wine Attic at Saint George Bistro presents the perfect backdrop for such an occasion. The table settings showcase fine china, silver teapots of various shapes and sizes, and exquisite floral arrangements designed by Seasons on the Hudson. The attentive service and excellent presentation make it perfect for celebrating a special occasion.
The selection of loose-leaf tea is sourced from Teagevity in Nyack. Guests have several tea options to choose from such as traditional black, relaxing chamomile lavender, or my favorite: hibiscus pineapple with notes of rosehip peels, hibiscus flowers, raspberry, and coconut.
Next comes a tower of tea sandwiches and canapés that are almost too pretty to eat. On the top tier was smoked salmon with caviar atop the softest blini and lobster salad piled on toasted brioche. The second tier offered gougère, a cheesy puff pastry, and duck and pistachio pâté on a crostini, just to name a few. And on the last tier rested three different sandwiches. My favorite was one with sliced cucumber and radish delicately layered with herbed cream cheese between two triangles of brown bread.

After polishing off the first tower we were brought an assortment of petit fours: lemon tartlets, classic éclairs, squares of orange almond cake, and decadent cups of chocolate mousse. But the real standout here was the fresh-out-of-the-oven scones served with clotted cream and fresh strawberry jam. Truthfully, one small scone didn’t cut it — I could have eaten an entire plate.
The next high tea at Saint George Bistro is June 11th from 2 pm to 4 pm. Tickets are $95 a pop, including Champagne, plus guests are invited to take home floral arrangements. Call and make a reservation. High Tea is a special event so space is limited.
