Laura G. Alcott is now co-chair of Dorf & Nelson’s Real Estate Department. Alcott is the founder of WIRE—“Women In Real Estate,” an entity formed to promote the interests of women in real estate. Alcott also continues to serve the real estate community by lecturing, providing continuing legal-education seminars on current topics and new trends, and hosting regular roundtable forums at which members of the business community can network, discuss issues, and formulate effective business plans.

MDxpress has opened a new facility at 1030 West Boston Post Road in Mamaroneck. The new walk-in medical facility with onsite digital X-ray and lab facilities is open seven days a week including holidays. Top doctors and medical assistants treat a variety of pediatric and adult non-life- and -limb-threatening injuries and illnesses, including cuts requiring stitches, flu, strep and sore throats, sprains, burns, headaches, stomachaches, asthma, allergic reactions, and more. Visiting Nurse Services in Westchester (VNSW), the largest nonprofit, community-based, Medicare-certified home-healthcare provider in Westchester and Putnam Counties, has expanded its visiting nurse and other home-healthcare services to include residents of the Bronx, as well as Dutchess and Rockland Counties.
The Wartburg’s longterm residential-care program was listed again this year by US News & World Report as among the best nursing homes in the New York metro area. The publication said that The Wartburg received five stars, the highest possible rating, from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The area’s 579 nursing homes were ranked based on health inspections, nurse staffing, and other quality measures.
First Niagara Financial Group, Inc. (NASDAQ:FNFG), has introduced new checking options for small-business customers. The company added a small-business segment in 2012 by adding more than 40 experienced bankers across the Northeast. The BIZ200 and BIZ500 checking options are designed specifically for the company’s growing small-business customer base. BIZ200 is designed for companies with up to $250,000 in revenue per month and includes such features as 200 free transactions per month and no minimum balance requirements or monthly account-maintenance fee. The new BIZ500 product was developed to address the needs of growing small businesses and features 500 free transactions per month.
A foreclosure sale of the Mount Kisco retail property formerly owned by Borders Books and Music at 62 East Main Street is underway, following the default of the bankrupt bookseller’s $6.3 million mortgage loan. Borders vacated the approximately 21,500-square-foot space in September 2011 when the company declared bankruptcy and closed all of its locations. Mount Kisco village officials have said they expect a new tenant will replace the downtown retail anchor in 2013.

President and CEO of HEINEKEN USA Dolf van den Brink has been named to Adweek’s Young Influentials List (ranked No. 6 out of 20). Adweek’s list celebrates thought leaders of marketing, media, technology, and top consumer brands under 40 years old. HEINEKEN USA was the only alcohol-industry company included, as well as the only Consumer Products Group company highlighted.

BIZ BUZZ: OUR BUSINESS BLOG
Pressure mounts on Governor Cuomo to raise the minimum wage; Elderly residents on fixed incomes sing the praises of Shiloh Baptist Church’s New Rochelle housing project; Yonkers legislators are irked at perceived slight by Legoland.
New York State is a bit closer to raising the minimum wage. On March 11, the State Senate included a gradual increase (though did not specify an amount) in its budget proposal. Meanwhile, President Obama has proposed increasing the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour, and state leaders have indicated they may wait until Congress acts. Governor Cuomo included a minimum wage of $8.75 in his budget proposal released in January, but indicated that it’s uncertain whether a minimum-wage increase would be included in the budget or dealt with later in the year.
The Shiloh Baptist Church in New Rochelle recently opened 39 affordable senior units in New Rochelle. Citing the need for affordable housing for seniors on low fixed incomes, the Shiloh Community Development Corporation, an arm of the church set up to create the housing, spearheaded the project along with Westhab, the Elmsford-based nonprofit organization that provides affordable housing and support services in Westchester County. Criteria for residency includes having a head of the household at least 62 years old and an income less than half the area’s median income (no more than $37,800 for a single person or $43,200 for a couple). The residents pay 30 percent of their income in rent.
Yonkers Councilman John Larkin is calling for the Legoland located at Ridge Hill to be called, “Legoland Discovery Center in Yonkers,” and plans to introduce legislation regarding the matter. The attraction, slated to open March 27, is currently known as “Legoland Discovery Center Westchester.” The Yonkers location is the only Legoland in the world not named after a city. Regarding the omission of Yonkers from the name as a form of disrespect, Larkin maintained that the company should be proud to be in Yonkers. For its part, Legoland responded that the name simply was meant to reflect the attraction’s regional appeal.
