Best Places to Live 2018: Greystone, Yonkers

While cities like White Plains and New Rochelle are generating buzz for their downtown revitalizations, the hottest neighborhood in Westchester’s most populous city is this enclave on the northern border. A flurry of recent condo and rental-apartment construction along the Hudson River in the Greystone neighborhood has brought renewed attention to this suburban sector of Yonkers.

“You’re right on the water — with immediate access to a dock and marina,” says Staci Zampa of Douglas Elliman in Chappaqua. “You have a view of the Tappan Zee and the George Washington Bridge. At the Riverview Club and River Tides, you have a direct access pathway to the Greystone train station.”

Zampa notes that two new rental properties offer many Manhattan-like amenities but at cheaper prices, starting at about $2,500 a month for a one-bedroom. And the neighborhood has condos with prices and taxes that are lower than most in Westchester, with one-bedroom units starting in the $350,000 range.

Neighborhood amenities include the recently renovated factory building known as the Boyce Thompson Center, which has a Starbucks, several restaurants, medical offices, and a blow-dry bar. The neighborhood is so close to the border of Hastings-on-Hudson that Greystone residents easily and frequently walk into the popular Rivertown village. The area also boasts the idyllic Untermyer Gardens and the Hudson River Museum.
