Tiger won the 2002 US Open on Bethpage Black, which normally wouldn’t mean much. For a guy who last won the Masters in 2005 and repeated in 2019, though, anything is possible. In 2002, Woods beat Phil Mickelson by three strokes in a win that came just two months after winning the Masters that year. Is there more history in the making?
The PGA of America moved the championship to May this year. While conditions remain to be seen, the course typically plays particularly tough in the spring if there’s even a normal amount of moisture to soften the fairways and make the native grasses in the rough even clingier. This could work to Woods’ advantage, especially since many of the younger players will be seeing the course for the first time.
A crowd of over 200,000 is expected. While weekend tickets may be hard to come by, don’t overlook the practice rounds Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Also keep in mind that each ticketed adult can bring up to four children aged 17 or younger onto the grounds for free. Junior tickets will be available each day of the Championship week, regardless of sellout. In addition, Active Duty, Retirees, Reserve, National Guard and their accompanying guests (limit one) will receive complimentary daily grounds access, regardless of sellout.
