Five local golf caddies were awarded full-ride scholarships through the Westchester Evans Scholarship program.

A strong caddie record, excellent academics, financial need, and outstanding character earned five local caddies full-ride housing-and-tuition scholarships this year through the Westchester Evans Scholarship program. The grants, valued at an estimated $120,000 over four years, were the latest awards from the partnership between the Westchester Golf Association Caddie Scholarship Fund and the Western Golf Association’s Evans Scholars Foundation.

New Rochelle High School graduate Christina Hughes started her college career at Penn State last fall thanks to the grant she received after looping for four years at Quaker Ridge, where her older brother caddied for several years. She says, “If it weren’t for the scholarship, I never would have gone to a school this good.” Christina is studying criminology, with an eye toward a possible career with the FBI and expects to return to Quaker Ridge to caddie this summer.

Joshua Benitez, the son of Peruvian immigrants in White Plains, was also awarded a Westchester Evans Scholarship as a result of looping at Fairview Country Club. “Working as a caddie has prepared me for adulthood by providing an opportunity for me to manage my own finances, appreciate the value of work, and see the importance of continuing my education,” Joshua says. “I’ve encountered immense amounts of generosity while caddying, and I wish to one day have the ability to reciprocate that.”

Three caddies from nearby Brooklawn CC also received Westchester Evans scholarships this school year. In addition to the new Evans scholars, the Westchester Caddie Scholarship fund is currently supporting 183 young men and women with an annual tuition commitment of over $950,000 for the 2022–23 school year.
