These Local Golf Clubs Are Amping Up Their Short-Game Practice Facilities

As they say, practice makes perfect.

Modern lifestyles may have reduced the number of rounds golfers play, but there’s been a corresponding increase in the amount of less-time-consuming practice. In response, local clubs have responded with major investments in practice facilities, several of which open this spring.

Members at Hudson National Golf Club greeted the new season in Croton with more than typical optimism as they started honing their games on the club’s new, expansive practice range and comprehensive short game facility.  The range, 400 yards wide at the tees, has the latest in performance measuring capability with a TrackMan radar system that will allow players to get instant feedback on their shots from their smart phones. A well-thought-out short game facility featuring a pair of greens surrounded by various turf/bunker situations will help players sharpen their scoring game. A new indoor teaching studio is under construction adjacent to the range and a multi-bedroom cottage for members is in the planning stages.

A new 3.5-acre short game area opens this spring as part of Old Oaks Country Club’s two-year project to update the already-strong Purchase golf facility.  The expansive new area has two target greens with three hole locations on each, three greenside bunkers and a fairway bunker. Head pro Nick Maselli says, “There’s lots of bent grass to practice off tight lies, and a variety of angles and slopes to create any short game shot you want.” The club also expanded its full range and has updated a repurposed building that houses a year-round practice studio that’s been in use for a couple of years.

Manhattan Woods in West Nyack opened its new practice facility late last season. The grass teeing area was expanded and a practice fairway bunker was installed since the real thing is a notable feature of the course. The short game area was upgraded as well so that members and guests can work on just about every conceivable shot from 40 yards and in.
