The Road to the US Open Begins in Westchester

USGA announces new event and trophy tour to kick off 2018 championship season.

Admit it: the US Open Championship trophy would look great on your coffee table. Of course to put it there, you’d need to beat about 10,000 of the world’s greatest golfers in the 118th US Open Championship at Shinnecock Hills. Better start sharpening up your short game or something!

You may not stand a realistic chance to win it, but can see the trophy up close and personal at Ray Catena Lexus in White Plains on April 14 from 12 to 4 PM or at Lexus of Mount Kisco on May 5, from 9 a.m. to noon. Tournament sponsor Lexus is building up to the event with a 40-stop tour for the trophy in the NY metro area.

If you want to take a shot at winning the trophy for real, though, the first step is registering for the US Open Local Qualifying tournament to be played at Mount Kisco Country Club on May 8. Anyone — including juniors and women golfers — with $200 for the entry fee and a handicap index of 1.4 can enter the tournament.  Hurry, though, registration ends on April 25.

Can’t get your official handicap down to 1.4 in time? You can still participate in the US Open as a spectator at Shinnecock Hills. Even if you can’t land final Sunday tickets, you won’t want to miss the new Celebration of Champions that begins this year during the practice round on Tuesday, June 12.  Amateur and professional golfers who have won other USGA championships like the US Amateur, US Senior Open, US Junior Amateur, and US Women’s Amateur will team up in an alternate shot exhibition over holes 10-13 on the tournament course.

USGA CEO Mike Davis says the inaugural event “Is a way to recognize those marvelous champions and their place in golf history.” Jack Nicklaus will be there to launch the festivities.

The US Open is scheduled for June 14-17 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island. It will be the fifth time the event has been held at the historic club, one of the five original founding clubs in the USGA along with St. Andrew’s GC in Westchester. Shinnecock hosted the second US Open in 1896 and is slated to do it for a sixth time in 2026.
