The Latest News on Westchester Golf Course Renovations

The golf boom continues to spawn a construction boom at Westchester clubs. Major work is underway on numerous courses as well as clubhouses and other amenities.

Ardsley CC’s interesting golf course will be even more intriguing this year following a yearlong redo of all the greens and bunkers as well as major changes to several holes. The Billy Bunker system was installed to improve drainage throughout the course, along with all-new green surrounds, many of which incorporate collection areas to add to short game options. One of the most significant changes was extension of the 15th green further behind the pond and creation of a new tee that will make it a drivable par 4 — if you dare.

Fenway GC installed Billy Bunkers throughout the golf course over the winter, plus changed the layout of a few bunkers to improve playability and refreshed all the tee boxes in preparation for cohosting (with Sleepy Hollow) the USGA’s U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship in September.

Old Oaks CC has undertaken the most extensive-ever renovation of the 50-room mansion that serves as its clubhouse. The 80,000-square-foot “summer home,” built in 1890 by Trenor L. Park, the commodore of the New York Yacht Club, will get new locker rooms on the lower level, restoration of the wood floors and other appointments on the main floor, a new patio and terrace, and a new kitchen to serve the three indoor dining facilities.

A major change on the Old Oaks golf course was the expansion of the pond on the 16th hole, bringing it closer to the tee box (and virtually eliminating a lay-up strategy) while providing additional water for the irrigation system.

Mount Kisco CC spent the winter putting the finishing touches on a renovation that included restoration of its bunkers and several tee boxes as well as selective tree removal to improve turf conditions and restore shot angles on certain holes.

Hudson National GC plans to close in late spring for a yearlong total renovation of its already-superb golf course. In addition to an entire new irrigation system, the club plans to upgrade all the bunkers and re-grass the greens. The challenging course, noted for impeccable conditioning, should prove an even stronger test of golf, with new greens that promise to push the capabilities of the Stimpmeter.

Bonnie Briar CC announced an extensive program of capital improvements slated to begin this year. Included is a new building to house a performance center for both golf and tennis. The golf section will have three simulator bays that also open to the range, which will encourage members to use the club year-round as a social center. The range itself is going to be upgraded. In addition, the club will install a new swimming facility, with two pools.
