European Ryder Cup Captain Luke Donald will receive the Metropolitan Golf Writers Association’s Gold Tee Award at the organization’s annual dinner at Brae Burn CC in Purchase on October 7. The dinner, held since 1952, raises money for the three metro caddie scholarship funds and the MGA Foundation.
Nearly every major figure in the game has been awarded the Gold Tee, including Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Patty Berg, Byron Nelson, Arnold Palmer, Nancy Lopez, Tom Watson, Jack Nicklaus, and Gary Player, to name just a few. The dinner is the largest social event of the golf season in the metro area, drawing a who’s who of national leaders in golf.
Also honored at this year’s dinner will be Seth Waugh, who retired as CEO of the PGA of America in June after six years. Waugh will receive the Paul Dillon Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes individuals as well as organizations for their contributions and service to golf.
In addition, the MGWA will present awards to Steve DiMeglio (Lincoln Werden Golf Journalism Award); Vincenzo Rallo and Mark Kalwa (Mary Bea Porter Award); Mark, Linda, Ryan, and Mark James McCormick (Family of the Year Award); Arcola Country Club (Club of the Year Award); and Julius Mason (Dave Anderson Spotlight Award).
The public is welcome to attend, although seating is limited. Seats are $425, tables for 10 are $4,250, and a portion of your reservation is tax deductible. If you can’t quite fill a table or you wish to make an additional contribution, the MGWA will invite disabled veterans who participate in the local PGA HOPE program to attend as your guests.
