A galaxy of golf stars shone at GlenArbor GC in Bedford this week. Gathered to support the 2019 Berenberg Gary Player Invitational were 13 major champions among the 32 top names from the Champions, PGA, LPGA, and European tours. The brightest star in the constellation was the title host himself, Gary Player.
“For many years, I have been fortunate enough to be able to use golf as a stage for making a positive impact in the world,” Player says. “Our goal is to help improve the lives of as many people globally as we possibly can, and it makes me proud to be able to greet another stellar field including some of the finest golf has ever known.
Player, who won 18 Major Championships across both the Regular and Senior tours, was joined by six-time Major Champion and fellow World Golf Hall of Famer Lee Trevino. Also among those on the roster was 1992 Masters Champion Fred Couples, 1998 Masters and Open Championship winner Mark O’Meara, 1987 Masters Champion Larry Mize, 1988 PGA Championship winner Jeff Sluman, and 2002 PGA Championship winner Rich Beem. Colin Montgomerie, who won 31 times on the European Tour, and Nick Price, winner of three major championships, were also in the field. Female champions were prominent as well. Three-time LPGA TOUR winner Beatriz Recari was joined by two-time LPGA Tour winner and 2007 Ana Inspiration Champion Morgan Pressel.
The Berenberg Gary Player Invitational at GlenArbor marks the North American stop on the series’ global calendar with events also staged in Abu Dhabi, London, Hong Kong, and in the tournament host and Grand Slam champion’s home nation of South Africa at Sun City. The money raised at all events helps The Player Foundation provide quality education for underprivileged children and strengthen impoverished communities around the world.
