Fugitive Arrested In Connection With Bronx Explosion That Killed FDNY Chief

Julio Salcedo Contrer is being held in Bergen County Jail awaiting arraignment later this week

A man has been arrested in connection with the two-story Bronx home that exploded on Tuesday morning, killing FDNY Battalion Chief and Yonkers resident Michael Fahy.

Julio Salcedo Contrer, 34, is currently being held as a fugitive from justice at Bergen County Jail after being arrested at his girlfriend’s apartment on Walker Street in New Jersey’s Cliffside Park on Tuesday, according to the Bergen County Sheriff’s office.

Contrer, who has a criminal history involving unlawful imprisonment, assault, and drug offenses, is being held without bail pending extradition from Bergen County. He is to be arraigned in New York later this week regarding potential charges in the fatal explosion. A Bergen County press officer tells Westchester that Contrer is simply being held at the Bergen County Jail, but there have been no charges filed as of yet.

Fahy, the battalion chief killed in yesterday’s incident, was honored this morning at his firehouse, the 19th battalion firehouse at 2175 Walton Avenue in the Bronx, where firefighters draped a purple and black blunting on the building’s exterior. Lohud reports that his funeral is planned for this Saturday, and there will also be a Mass in his memory at Annunciation Church on Westchester Avenue in Crestwood.
