Century CC’s Frank Bensel stepped back into the winner’s circle with a playoff triumph at the PGA Stroke Play Championship this week at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. It’s the fifth time Bensel has won the PGA Winter Championship.
His win came after a 15-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole saved him from elimination. He went on to take the title two holes later with a par. He had started the day two strokes behind the leaders but shot a 2-under 70 to force the playoff with David Muttitt from Albuquerque, NM.
Another local pro, Rob Labritz of GlenArbor, missed the playoff by a stroke. Labritz finished T-3 for the tournament.
Last month, Bensel held a two-stroke lead in the PGA Senior Stroke Play Championship, but stumbled on the 17th hole and lost in a playoff to Omar Uresti.
