Jack Weiller has loved baseball since he started playing the sport when he was 4 years old.
“I started at the Bedford Hills/Katonah Little League,” Weiller says. “And ever since I started playing baseball, I just fell in love with the game in every aspect. The camaraderie of the teammates, the game itself; it’s just been very attractive to me.”
His love of the game has helped Weiller, now a junior at John Jay High School, develop into one of Westchester’s top baseball players. He’s started at shortstop for the Indians since his freshman year, and, last season, he helped John Jay win the Class A Section 1 championship and reach the state semifinals for the first time in school history.
“That whole experience was just crazy,” he says. “People ask me to this day what it was like, and I really cannot explain it with words. It was just a dream come true to get all the way up there. It was just this insane, magical ride.”
He then had a busy summer with the Taconic Rangers club team. “Over the summer and in the fall, I worked on getting a little stronger, so I’m able to get it across on a line [from shortstop to first base],” he says.
Last summer, Weiller also made his college choice, deciding on the University of Virginia. “I visited Virginia over the summer and I just fell in love with it,” he says. “Big-time southern baseball organization, but also the small-town feel of Katonah, like up here in the north.”
